Review: God in Flames, God in Fetters

God in Flames, God in Fetters: Loki's Role in the Northern Religions by Stephan Grundy

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Through a series of articles collected and edited into this book, the author takes an academic look at Loki's historical place in the tales of the gods and early Scandinavian religious practices, and what conclusions (if any) we can draw about how this can instruct Loki's inclusion in modern-day Heathenry.

The book does a good job of providing a basic summary of the relevant myths and sources. However, at a minimum, the reader should have read the edda's and have a basic understanding of the Norse pantheon before undertaking this book.

Overall, it was an interesting and informative read, if not unbiased.

I especially appreciate the variety within the bibliography from both the editor (Ben Waggoner) and the author (Stephan Grundy). It will offer plenty of opportunities to continue delving into historical and modern-day Loki worship issues.
